The RHYTHM, a movie written, produced and directed by Gerald McBride an alum of WGPR radio and TV tells the story of a black hockey player released from prison to coach a Detroit inner city hockey team. The movie depicts the challenges the black hockey team faces, their perseverance, along with romance and heartbreak on the way to winning by bringing RHYTHM to the game of hockey.

Vince McCraw, president of the Detroit Chapter of the NABJ revealed the names
of the outstanding professionals participating on the panel. Dr. Erin Perry, editor-
in-chief, Outlier Media will moderate the discussion with the panelists; Jeremy
Allen, editor-in-chief, Michigan Chronicle; Martina Guzman, director of
community journalism, Planet Detroit; Nicole Avery Nichols, editor, Detroit Free
Press; Kennan Oliphant, vice president news and station manager, CBS Detroit and
Briana Rice, reporter Michigan Public Radio.

Detroit Basketball superstar and hall of famer Isiah Thomas is coming Saturday October 4, 2025 to celebrate with us, the 50th Anniversary of WGPR TV62, America’s first African American owned and operated television station. Thomas will captain a team of special guests including former basketball and football stars Kendrick Perkins and Cam Newton along with ESPN executive vice president David Roberts, a WGPR TV62 alum.
You’re invited to join us for dinner, live music and some wisdom from Isiah Thomas our keynote speaker for the evening.

Jefferson (the former TV studios of WGPR TV 62) Saturday October 4, 2025 from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm. The WGPR Historical Society Celebrates the 50th Anniversary of America’s first Black owned and operated television station with a commemorative dinner honoring those who contributed to the station’s success and its’ historic legacy.

An evening of dinner, dance, live entertainment and paying tribute to the cultural, civic, and media impact WGPR-TV62 has had on Detroit and the nation.

The WGPR Historical Society invites you to attend an exclusive fundraiser event featuring the Detroit based Motion picture “Black Ice: The Rhythm” September 20th at 5 pm at the William V. Banks Broadcast Museum and Media Center 3146 E. Jefferson.
Gerald McBride, known for his popular radio show “Battle of the Ole School,” and former WGPR radio and TV62 personality wrote, directed and produced Black Ice: The Rhythm. This special screening of this inspirational movie follows the life of a talented Black hockey player who is wrongfully convicted and sent to prison. The condition of his release from prison is he must teach an undisciplined group of young black teens to play hockey at a Detroit rec center. The movie depicts the challenges of the black hockey team as they face racism and perseverance along with romance and heartbreak within the competitive world and game of hockey. You will love this story!
